A handmade accessory lasts years if it's treated well, and is ruined in one wash if it's treated like a sock. The rules are few and apply to almost everything.

The basics

1. Always by hand, never in the machine: the drum deforms rigid structures and ruins the inner elastics of scrunchies. 2. Cold or lukewarm water (never hot) with a little mild soap or delicate detergent. 3. Don't rub and don't wring: press gently to push the water out. 4. Air-dry, flat on a towel, away from radiators and direct sun. 5. No tumble dryer, ever.

By fabric

• Silk and satin: a quick wash; iron inside out on low while still slightly damp.
• Velvet: don't soak unless you need to; often a soft brush is enough. If you wash it, don't press the pile while wet.
• Wool and crochet: cold water, dry flat and reshape with your hands. Never hang (it stretches).
• Cotton: the most resilient — tolerates a 30°C wash in a mesh bag, but hand-washing lasts longer.

Embellishments

Pearls, crystals and hand embroidery: wash by hand only, gently, and don't leave to soak. Dry straight away to avoid marks on the metal.

Storage

• Headbands and rigid hairbands: flat or upright, not crushed under other things.
• Crochet hats: stuffed with tissue paper to hold the crown.
• Scrunchies: in a drawer, not hung (the elastic loosens).
• Everything you order arrives in a dust bag — use it, it protects from dust and damp.

With a little care, a Tétè headband or scrunchie stays like new for many seasons.
