A headband that slides is usually just the wrong size. Here's the 30-second way to get the number right, so a made-to-measure piece actually fits.

What you need

A soft tape measure. No tape? Use a piece of string and then measure the string against a ruler.

The method

1. Place the tape around your head where the accessory will sit — for a headband and turban, that's just above the ears and across the middle of the forehead, following your hairline at the back. 2. Keep the tape level all the way round, snug but not tight — one finger should slide under it. 3. Read the number in centimetres. Measure twice.

What the number means

• Our standard size fits a circumference of 55–58 cm. Most adults fall here.
• Below 54 cm or above 59 cm: order made to measure — a standard piece won't grip well.
• For a looser, more comfortable fit (for example during hair loss), add 1–2 cm to your measurement and tell us you'd like a soft fit.

Rigid hairbands (alice bands)

These aren't measured by circumference but by the distance over the crown, ear to ear. If a standard rigid band pinches your temples or slips forward, that's the sign to size it — tell us and we'll adjust the arc.
