A hair scarf is one of those accessories that comes back around every few years and, worn badly, ages an outfit a decade. It's all in the knot and the placement. Here are seven ways that work now.

1. Folded headband, knot at the back

Fold the scarf into a triangle, then roll it into a band 3–4 cm wide. Set it from your forehead and tie behind, under your hair. The ends tuck away. The cleanest, most discreet option.

2. Foulard, knot on top

Same triangle fold, but the wide part sits behind your neck and the two points tie at the crown, slightly off-centre. More coverage, wind-proof, right for a day by the sea.

3. Over an updo

High ponytail or bun, then a rolled scarf over the hairline with the knot peeking out beside the updo. A fifties touch without going full costume.

4. Full head wrap

Open scarf, large: start at the nape, bring the ends to the front, cross them at the forehead and take them back to tie. The fabric wraps the whole head. Works best with cotton or a slightly structured weave.

5. Woven into a braid

Twist the scarf and plait it into a side braid along with a section of hair. Boho, summery, good for long hair.

6. Neck to hair

A classic: scarf at the neck with a side knot. If you want to move it up into your hair during the day, it's already there — one accessory, two looks.

7. Top-knot bow

Wrap a thin rolled scarf around the base of a top knot and tie a small bow. Playful, quick, photographs well.

Which scarf for which knot

  • Cotton: holds a knot, keeps its shape — best for the wrap and the 70s looks.
  • Silk and satin: elegant, slips more — keep the knot tight or use it over an updo.
  • Crochet: textured, with tassels, for a handmade look that gets noticed.
  • Prints: paisley and animal print are the most versatile; plain colours go with everything.

Our bandanas and head scarves are hand-sewn and hand-crocheted in Italy in limited colour runs. The larger foulards are the ones to tie as a full wrap or a turban.
