The scrunchie has gone from being a 90s memory to an accessory that almost everyone keeps in their bag. The difference between a random scrunchie and one made well, however, is noticeable — on your hair and over time.

Why it's gentler than a hair tie

A normal hair tie has a small surface area and high friction: it concentrates all the tension on a few strands of hair, which break or get creased. A scrunchie wraps that same elastic in a soft and wide fabric band: the tension is distributed, the fabric glides instead of "biting," and when you take it off, you don't pull your hair.

For those with long, fine, or treated hair (colored, straightened), it is the difference between finding broken hair at the hairline and not finding it.

What makes a good scrunchie

1. The fabric: silk and satin glide more and are the most delicate; velvet holds a high ponytail better; cotton is the freshest in summer. 2. The amount of fabric: a "full," densely gathered scrunchie lasts longer and provides more volume. Flat ones go limp after a few weeks. 3. The internal elastic: it must be sturdy and sewn, not just knotted. In ours, we secure it by hand. 4. Hidden seams: a good scrunchie has no visible seams or fraying edges.

Which one to choose based on your hair

  • Fine or thin hair: small or medium silk/satin scrunchie. A large one will slip.
  • Thick or curly hair: large and full scrunchie, in velvet or cotton, which supports the volume without loosening.
  • High ponytail that needs to hold all day: velvet.
  • Night / wet hair: silk, it reduces frizz.

How to wash it

By hand, in cold water with a little mild detergent, and let it air dry away from radiators. No washing machine: the internal elastic will get ruined. Silk can be ironed inside out at a low temperature.

Handmade, in Italy

Our scrunchies are sewn by hand one by one, in limited series of fabrics that are often not repeated. You can find them individually or in gift sets, to be paired with a headband or a hair clip in the same fabric.
